Travel resources
Check these, not just the blogs
Advisories, outbreaks, storms and entry rules change on their own schedule. These are the sources I check before every trip. None of them are mine except one, and none of them pay me.
Before you book
Check these first. They change more often than any blog post can keep up with.
US State Department travel advisories
Country-by-country risk levels, updated continuously.
UK FCDO travel advice
Often more detailed than the US version. Useful even if you're not British.
Australian Smartraveller
Plain-language safety briefings and a good solo-travel section.
IATA Travel Centre
Entry rules, visas and documents for your exact passport.
Health and vaccinations
Book vaccines 4–6 weeks before you fly. Some need multiple doses.
Weather, sea and storms
Especially relevant if you're heading anywhere in this site's Caribbean coverage.
While you're there
Practical things worth having saved offline before you land.
Find your nearest embassy
Save the address and phone number to your phone before you go.
Numbeo crime index
Crowd-sourced safety data by city. Directional, not gospel.
Wise
Currency conversion at the real exchange rate, and a card that doesn't gouge you abroad.
Rome2Rio
Ferry, bus and shuttle routes that Google Maps often misses.
